Bakersfield Behavioral Healthcare Hospital held its very first Grand Round event the evening of February 28th, 2018. We were very fortunate to have Dr. Gerardo Iru Fernando give a presentation on The Opioid Epidemic to our lively and participatory group.
Through this very informative talk, Dr. Fernando spoke about the history of opioids, how the use of them for pain management grew, and how addiction works on the pleasure center of our brains. He also spoke about treatments that are available for opioid addiction and the difference between addiction and physical dependence. Additionally, we learned about treatments that are being studied in other countries and some alternative, or more controversial treatments.
During the Q & A segment at the end, there were a lot of great and thoughtful questions, along with a few personal experience stories from audience members.
We are very thankful for the great turn out for this event. BBHH really wants to be a resource for our community and we look forward to each additional talk given for The Grand Rounds.
