Chemical Dependency

Program Philosophy

Substance misuse and dependence has become a significant issue in our society today, and it affects individuals from all walks of life. Our chemical dependency treatment is designed to help alleviate the physiological effects of detoxifying and cleansing the body from substances, and provide guidance, education, and support during the most intense part of this process. Patients admitted to the chemical dependency program participate in a medically supervised recovery program designed to assist them through withdrawal from mind-altering chemicals, licit or illicit. We believe that chemical dependency is a disease with its own set of progressive symptoms which may be identified and treated. We also believe that it manifests itself uniquely in each individual and family and that recovery is a dynamic process. We are committed to deliver recovery-based treatment in a therapeutic client-centered environment which respects each individual’s rights, dignity and needs. We work collaboratively with the patient in the recovery process.

Benefits of Program

The chemical dependency program offers an intensive service to persons who are medically stable and who are highly unlikely to suffer any significant negative effects during a detoxification process but who do require a level of medication and monitoring to successfully detoxify. One of the most commonly asked questions at the time of admission is “how long am I going to be here?” The length of stay is determined by the nature and complexity of the addiction being treated, the patient’s response to treatment, and physician recommendations.

Each patient is provided with a Multidisciplinary Treatment Team to ensure comprehensive care delivered in a holistic and patient focused way. Each team includes a Medical Physician, Board Certified Psychiatrist, Certified Addiction Specialist, Registered Nurse, a Licensed or Registered Mental Health Clinician, Registered Dietician, and Pharmacist.

Program Description

Our chemical dependency program is designed to help alleviate the physiological effects of detoxifying and cleansing the body from substances, and provide guidance, education, and support during the most intense part of this process. In addition to the medical care and treatment provided, a variety of education and therapeutic services are also provided to increase coping skills and awareness about the addiction disease process. The routine and structure of the hospital are part of the treatment program as are the group and individual sessions. Below are descriptions of each of the therapeutic components and the ways they can help the healing and recovery process.

Cognitive-Behavioral Group Therapy - The group process is focused on thought processes and interpretations (perceptions) of events that contribute to behaviors and emotions associated with addiction. Reflective discussions enable the patient to gain insight and a sense of control over defeating thoughts and behaviors.

Educational Groups –The Certified Addiction Specialists facilitate these groups and they are based upon the Seeking Safety curriculum and individualized packets are provided to each patient. The information shared provides education about the disease process of addiction and substance misuse.

Individual/ Family Therapy – The disease of addiction has a tendency to cause interference to healthy relationships, characterized by very strong emotions occurring in both the individual with the addiction as well as their family members. Individual and family therapy are designed to facilitate healing and a sense of understanding through effective communication and emotional expression. In addition, it may also be beneficial during one of these types of sessions to identify a plan for maintaining or creating an environment that supports sobriety after discharge.

Reflection - Daily reflections and handouts are provided to set intentions for the day. The reflection is meant to provide encouragement and motivation for change.

Meditation - The meditation focuses on relaxation techniques using music and visualization. These are very important skills to learn as they can greatly reduce stress and anxiety, combat cravings, and assists in re-creating a sense of wellness.

Care Coordination – Certified Addiction Specialists are available to assist with discharge planning to ensure continuity of care in the community. It is highly recommended that each patient take full advantage of the most intensive services available following their stay in our chemical dependency program. This allows for the best chance for long term sustained sobriety. Many patients choose to enter our residential treatment program or intensive outpatient program following the completion of their detoxification process. Community resources and information are also provided, as needed, to meet individual needs.
